Google navigates by crawling. That means they follow links from page to page. Site owners get to choose whether their sites are crawled. They then sort the pages by their content, date of release and many other factors. All this information is then stored in what is called ‘The Index’.

Algorithms

Google writes programs & formulas that try to deliver the best results possible. Using an advanced set of rules influenced by something called a ‘String Theory’, the algorithms try to look for clues to better understand what you mean. Based on these clues, Google then pulls the relevant documents from the index.

Fighting Spam

Spam is fought 24/7 in Google so that your search results are kept as relevant as possible. A majority of spam removal is automatic, but when a questionable situation is escalated, action is taken after a manual assessment. When action is taken, Google usually makes an attempt to notify website owners so that they can fix the issues and keep Google in the know.
